The DB12 V8 recalibrates the grand tourer breed. Its Mercedes-AMG co-developed 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 delivers 671bhp, brutal acceleration and a thunderous soundtrack, while sharpened steering, massive grip and a compliant ride make it a surprisingly focused driver's car. The cabin is a huge leap over the DB11, with superb materials and new infotainment, though rear seats remain token.

Named to Editors' Choice, the DB12 is the best all-around Aston Martin in years. In US spec, 656 hp rockets it to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds; the retuned chassis, rear-locking differential and active engine mounts make it athletic and playful on a twisty road. The interior is opulent but ergonomically imperfect, and the brake-by-wire system takes some acclimatization.

With 671 hp, it hits 60 mph in 2.8 seconds; the new eight-speed automatic is a massive improvement, and the rear-biased all-wheel-drive system can send full power rearward in track mode for a playful feel. It handles with surprising balance for a near-4,000-pound car, though the interior has a few ergonomic quirks.

The V8 is smooth and potent, the gearbox decisive, and the steering and handling sharp and purposeful. The ride can be busy at low speeds and the cabin lacks physical controls, but it is superbly resolved and more than the sum of its parts.
